The Peace Event: NC-ACDA Convention
Omaha, Nebraska March 1-4, 2006
Conspirare served as the choir in residence at the regional convention of the North Central ACDA in March 2006. Following the Austin, Houston, and Kyle performances of the "Wondrous Journey" concert series in late February, the choir flew to Omaha, Nebraska for the convention, where they performed two concerts and took part in two interest sessions.
Craig Hella Johnson was commissioned by the NCACDA to create and program a special concert at the St. Cecilia Cathedral (entitled The Peace Event) to consider peace through a variety of lenses: peace with the earth, peace among the people of the world, peace within the individual, and peace with God. This was the major event of the convention, and included three choirs from the region in addition to Conspirare and soloists.
The Peace program was similar in style to the "collage" style programming that Johnson utilizes in the Christmas at the Carillon concerts, combining songs and texts from many different genres and styles. It was met with very enthusiastic acclaim, as evidenced by this sampling of comments we received:
"fabulous audience reactions to your incredible concert. Stunning, stunning performance! The review you received last year describing Conspirare as the next Robert Shaw Chorale sells you short!" -Greg Carpenter, President North Central American Choral Directors Association
"It was the most inspiring, emotional, exceptional concert that I ever experienced in my life. The choirs were magnificent and the message was incredibly important and powerful.Movements in Peace should be performed in Washington DC, New York City,.it should not end with ACDA in Omaha. With all that is going on in our world, it speaks to people in a totally different way." -Robin Hughes, Director of Choral Activities, Mankato, MN
"...in classrooms all over the midwest, hundreds of kids/college students are being brought into something so much bigger than themselves. I continue to be awed by the beauty, intellectual difficulty, elegance, grace and love in your work.and by the spiritual intention that informs it all. My colleagues.were overwhelmed by their first experience of you and Conspirare.they were speechless." -Rebecca Wyffels, Choir Director, Wayzata, MN
